Safe Zone: GLBT 101

"Safe Zone GLBT 101" is an interactive presentation that offers basic education regarding Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered persons and their lives. It also encourages students to consider the importance of awareness in regards to GLBT persons and experiences. The program includes an interactive game where students will identify ways in which they have already learned about GLBT experiences (Television, Movies, Personal Experiences, etc). Students will then be given a True/False worksheet that helps them discuss stereotypes and assumptions as they relate to the GLBT population on college campuses.

c) Describe and demonstrate principles of responsible citizenship within and beyond the campus community
As a result of this presentation, students will:
- Be able to define basic terminology regarding the GLBT community.
- Be able to examine issues of bias and stereotyping more critically.
- Students will be more aware of their own biases.
- Students will be able to identify more closely with the experiences of their GLBT classmates and community members.
Program Description
This presentation is presented by Safe Zone Graduate Assistant and formatted with discussion and interactive large and small group activities.
- Presentation topics/activities to include:
- What Do You See: students will view a short video segment of GLBT persons from various TV shows and movies. They will then be asked to discuss the various times they have seen GLBT characters and what those characters were like.

- GLBT True/False: students will complete a True/False test which will ask them to examine various stereotypes about the GLBT community. They will then respond to each and discuss in the group why certain stereotypes are reinforced.

- Genderless Weekend: students will pair up and be asked to describe their past weekend without revealing the gender of the persons they were with. They will then participate in a discussion comparing this experience to one that a GLBT person might have.
