OVERVIEW OF UNIV101 ACE ACADEMIC SUCCESS PRESENTATIONS

Remember these presentations are more of a workshop and less of a lecture. The presentation should always consist of the following: I. Assessment/Self-Inquiry, II. Skill Development, III. Active Skill Practice

Before the Presentation

  1. Identify the presentation the instructor requested via the Online Request Form

    1. Decide the best order in which to present the skills
    2. If presenting with a partner, decide who will be responsible for each skill

  2. Use the Presentation Resource Binder to review ideas and plan out the presentation
  3. Use the Study Skills Binder to determine which handouts and activities you want to use
  4. Obtain worksheets and handouts from ACE offices (~20/U101 class)
  5. Obtain informational handouts about ACE and campus partners from ACE offices

During the Presentation

Introductions

  1. Introduce Yourself as an ACE Academic Success Coach
    1. Explain your role as an ACE Coach
  2. Facilitate an Academic Ice Breaker to learn students names
  3. Give an Overview of ACE
    1. Discuss transition from high school to college and how ACE can help (services, locations, hours)

Topic Content

  1. Discuss Study Skill
    1. What does this study skill consist of?
    2. How have you used this skill in high school to your advantage?
    3. What are some challenges with this study skill?
  2. Assess Study Skill
    1. Use formal or informal self-assessments (depending on time limit)
      1. Formal: hard-copy assessment
      2. Informal: Questions Coach asks the students
  3. Develop the Study Skill
    1. Use ACE handouts to provide tips and guidance for students to improve this study skill
  4. Practice the Study Skill
    1. Use ACE worksheets to actively practice the skill in groups or individually
  5. Transition into Next Study Skill
    1. Tie in the importance of how these study skills relate to each other
  6. Repeat steps I-V for each new skill

Closing

  1. Actively review with students the study skills
  2. Hand out the presentation evaluations to students and collect them
  3. Encourage students to set up an appointment with an ACE coach
  4. Re-emphasize ACE services, locations, and hours
  5. Thank the class and say goodbye
    1. Consider using catch phrase: "Remember Study Smarter, Not Harder!"
