Student Research Spotlight

Jessica Edenfield

What are you researching?

This project specifically focused on the factors that influence admission or denial into an inpatient rehabilitation facility following an ischemic stroke. We assessed variables such as basic demographic information, insurance status, comorbidities NIH scores, reasons patients were denied, and if they were denied where were they discharged to.

How could the results benefit patients?

Thus far our results have shown no statistical significance between age, gender, ethnicity, insurance status, or comorbidities. Though these results are what we hoped for, I think it will prevent patients from being discouraged or doubtful that they will not qualify for inpatient rehabilitation due to the aforementioned factors. Patients who need inpatient rehabilitation following an ischemic stroke, if they qualify based on medical necessity and therapeutic needs, should be able to gain admission.

Tell us why you enjoy research.

I am specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which many don't know deals with a large variety of patients ranging from inpatient to outpatient, acute vs chronic problems, and everything across the neurologic spectrum. There is so much we still do not know about retraining the body after an insult, such as a stroke or amputation, so there is plenty of opportunity for research. Although the process can be arduous, I enjoy participating in research because I understand the meaningful impact it can have on my current and future patients lives.

What advice would you give to other students considering doing a research project?

Be patient especially if you are starting a project from the ground up. I was so frustrated in the beginning trying to figure out the goal of our project and what steps needed to take to get there. Everything just seemed to be taking longer than I expected. I think being patient and confident that you can complete the project is the best outlook to have!
