Research Overview

The overall goal of the lab is to define TGF-β signaling networks in the regulation of intracellular and cell-matrix interactions. The objectives are to:

1)  Discover the molecular and cellular basis of cancer initiation and metastasis as controlled by TGF-β superfamily members.

2)  To translate these discoveries into a source of novel therapeutic targets as well as strategies to reduce cancer incidence and improve/predict patient outcomes.

The transforming growth factor-β superfamily of growth factors, including the Activins, Bone morphogenetic proteins and Inhibins have physiological roles in regulation of growth, cell differentiation and apoptosis in a cell and context-specific manner. TGFβ family ligands signal utilizing  Type I and Type II  Receptor Serine Threonine Kinases (RSTK's) and Type III co-receptors  (TGFBR3 and Endoglin) (Figure 1).

TGF-β's play context dependent roles in cancer, acting either as a tumor suppressor or as a tumor promoter. Understanding the contexts that dictate TGF-β responses remains a fundamental problem in the cancer biology field and affects our ability to target these pathways in various pathologies.
