CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Required of all athletes participating in intercollegiate sports for the first time at Allan Hancock College. Provides the necessary skills for student athletes to achieve their educational and athletic goals. This course is not open to students who are enrolled in or have received credit for PD 101.
COURSE GOALS To encourage and enable students to
- leverage sports experiences in order to identify and achieve academic goals.
- create an environment that supports healthy lifestyles.
- understand the necessity of the effective management of time, money, and stress as essential life skills.
- understand how interpersonal communication skills increase their ability to become active participants in academic and co-curricular life.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES At the end of the course, the student will demonstrate the ability to
- practice positive thinking in order to achieve academic and athletic success.
- prepare a comprehensive educational plan by integrating information about individual abilities and skills with an awareness of academic and intercollegiate preparation requirements.
- identify and apply the steps in decision making and problem solving.
- develop and implement a realistic weekly time schedule based upon academic and athletic requirements and work and other personal time limitations.
- identify methods for coping with his or her most prevalent stressors.
- create a strategic plan clearly stating his or her financial goals, both short-term and long-term, and the objectives necessary to achieve them.
- access the academic and student support services available within the college and community.
- improve his or her diet.
- identify the hazards of substance use and abuse.
- explain the nature of chemical dependency and its abuse in athletics.
- explain own attitude about sexuality as it is affected by current debates about sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and acquaintance rape.
- communicate with friends, teammates, coaches, instructors, and employers.
- use gender-free language.
- explain Title IX and other Federal laws relating to gender discrimination.

Read one outside book, article, etc. on any athletic event, site, contest, team, coach, player to develop a sense of the role of sport in our society. Then write a two-page typed paper which explains, narrates, or explicates that role.
EVALUATION Describe the methods by which students and instructors will know how the objectives listed above have been met.
Quizzes, tests, comprehensive final, oral and written reports, class participation.
Example: Some colleges have adopted anti-harassment policies that prohibit students from subjecting others to verbal abuse based on race, religion, gender, disability, ethnicity, national origin, or sexual orientation. However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) believes such policies violate students' constitutional right of free speech. What do you think? Briefly explain your position.
