COURSE SYLLABUS

Course: MGCS 1101, Managing Goals and College for Success
Credit: 2 credit hours
Prerequisites: Required of all students seeking a degree unless exempt

Description: An Introduction to College course, MGCS 1101 is designed to assist students through the transition to college life and to offer them the necessary tools to succeed academically and socially. Students will be engaged in a variety of discussions with reading, speaking, writing and listening assignments.

Text: Middle Georgia College Catalog and Your College Experience, media edition, Gardner and Jeweler.

Course Goals:
to develop essential academic skill
to develop analytical and critical thinking skill
to improve communication skills (written and oral)
to improve personal responsibility and self-assessment
to engage in goal clarification, academic advising, planning/decision-making
Course Content (not limited to)
orientation to MGC, resources and policies, including library and computer labs
using GCIS to explore career opportunities
establishing goals
writing research papers
presenting oral report, single or group
writing through use of journals or response
recognizing how one learns best
using a systematic learning cycle through use of time management
implementing study strategies including note-taking/listening skills, test-taking, maximizing use of your textbook, etc.
thinking/reading critically, obstacles to, recognition of slant, point of view, bias, persuasion, problem solving strategies
interviewing professors, staff, administrators
attending a campus event--speaker or performance

Course Style: MGCS 1101 is designed to foster interaction amongst students. You will be engaged in active learning strategies, small group discussions, writing assignments and outside Internet explorations. This course is designed for participation and involvement.

Course Requirements: Including but not limited to: required readings, writings, quizzes and exams, campus event, oral presentation, faculty, staff, administrator interview.

Course Attendance: The classroom experience is a vital part of college education. Interaction with the instructor and other students is an important element of the learning process. Students are expected to attend all class sessions, and are responsible for the material covered or assigned during absences. Two tardies count as one absence. You will receive an attendance grade based on the following: 10 point deduction per each absence, 5 point deduction per each tardy.

Expectations: Just as the student expects the instructor to assist them in reaching course objectives, the instructor expects the students to come to class fully prepared with textbook, notebook, and writing implements. Ask questions! Do your homework and assignments on time. Late assignments will be penalized 10 points. Review your notes from the previous class prior to the start of the next class.

Grading:    Grades will be assessed on a 10-point scale.
