Course description:
Orientation to the structures of higher education. Exposure to college resources and educational planning. Analysis of college success factors for student achievement.

Course goals:

  • Introduction to college
  • Introduction to higher education and the role of the community college
  • Educational planning

Course objectives:

  • Describe in a paper, the structure of higher education: How to select a campus with the best fit, general admission requirements, level of degrees, general steps necessary to get a degree, and how to read college catalogs.
  • Present a project summarizing the resources available on college campuses.
  • Present a project describing the available campus student services.
  • Keep a journal which documents the development of personal, career and academic goals.
  • Present an educational plan.

Methods of instruction:

  • Lecture/Guest speakers
  • Group activities
  • Field trips

Evaluation and expectations:

  • Attendance-Be prepared to attend each and every class and be on time
  • Participation-Be prepared to participate in all class activities, this means all homework and reading must be completed before class
  • Classwork and Homework-Complete all assignments to the best of your ability and on time

Required materials:

  • PCC catalog
  • Guidance 10 handbook
  • 3 ringer binder
  • Cornell note paper

Grading:

  • Grading is credit/No Credit. Students must complete all assignments to receive credit
