COURSE PURPOSE
UNIV 100 is a two-credit hour course that serves as an introduction to higher education and an on-going orientation to BGSU resources, academic skills and social issues. This course is designed to help new students adjust to college life and establish skills that will assist them in being successful at BGSU.

ATTENDANCE
Attending class is an important part of succeeding in any course. Attendance to every class is expected and required. No absence is excused unless cleared with an instructor prior to class. Please contact an instructor by phone or e-mail if you have a problem making it to class. As outlined in the Grade Breakdown section of this syllabus, points are awarded for class attendance.

PARTICIPATION
Class participation is critical to the success of individual students and the class in general. The more you put into something, the more you get out of it! Please do not be afraid to speak up.

ASSIGNMENTS
No late assignments will be accepted! If any unforeseen circumstances arise, contact an instructor ASAP. If you are having difficulties meeting deadlines, please inform the instructors.

APPRECIATION & UNDERSTANDING
Everyone has so much to offer and share with the class. We can learn a great deal from each other if we are open minded, appreciative, and understanding.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance & Participation
- (1 point per session = 30 points)

Student Spotlight
- (10 points) Students will need to prepare a 3-5 minute presentation that will introduce themselves to the class. Suggestions for this presentation include pictures, stories, keepsakes, etc. Be creative!

First Semester Reaction Papers - (2 papers @ 15 points each = 30 points) At two times during the semester, students will write a two page paper expressing their thoughts, feelings, opinions, concerns about their college and life experiences. Additional topic information will be provided.

Campus Event Papers - (2 papers @ 15 points each = 30 points) Students will attend two BGSU events and write a one page summary of the event. In addition to providing a brief overview of the campus event, your paper should focus on your reaction to the event. When providing your reaction, you may want to consider the following questions:

  • What attracted you to this event?
  • Would you encourage or discourage other BGSU students to attend a similar event? Why?
  • Would you attend another event like this in the future? Why?

Core Values Presentation - (40 points) Students will work with three other class members on this group project and presentation. Each group will select one of the BGSU Core Values and determine its impact on the BGSU community. Information will be presented to the class during a 20-minute presentation. Additional information/guidelines will be provided.

Faculty Interview - (30 points) Students will interview a faculty member at BGSU and write a two to three page paper about the experience. This assignment is designed to expose students to the faculty and to increase their level of comfort when approaching faculty. Additional information/guidelines will be provided.

My Significant Year - (30 points) Students will be asked to think of a significant year in their lives and describe in a two to three page paper why the year they chose was significant. Through the magazine collection housed in Jerome Library students will be asked to identify what was happening in that year as far as politics, current events, the arts, medicine, etc. Additional information/guidelines will be provided.

Final Paper - (50 points) Students will analyze their progress during their first semester and present their reactions in a three to five page paper. Students should reflect on their growth and development as a student and as an individual from the beginning of the semester to the end. Additional information/guidelines will be provided.
