Community Engagement

Partner Organizations

The University of South Carolina provides pathways to partner community organizations with university groups, departments and offices to meet the needs of the engagement project. Contact us to see how we can work with you.

University Partners

Our university partners come from all of our colleges and schools as well as offices and divisions across campus including:

The Leadership and Service Center is a free, on-campus resource that helps students build leadership skills, impact the community and expand education beyond the classroom. Student service opportunities include the following:

Center for Integrative and Experiential Learning  (CIEL) allows students to create a plan that maps their academic pursuits with experiences that enhance their leadership skills. Students can earn credits to Graduate with Leadership Distinction by choosing experiences focused on community service.

Civic-minded fraternity and sorority organizations seek to develop global citizens by enhancing their academic pursuits through a value-based fraternal experience. Fraternity and sorority core values are scholarship, leadership, service and friendship.

Community Organizations

We work with organizations both large and small including:

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. The University of South Carolina annually sponsors two AmeriCorps VISTAs. One VISTA works simultaneously in the Office of Service-Learning and Community Engagement and the South Carolina Honors College.  SCCC VISTAs respond to the needs in the community surrounding the college or university they serve and mobilize student volunteers to make an impact both on campus and in the community. For more information, visit AmeriCorps.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia makes meaningful matches between volunteer mentors (Bigs) and children ages 6-13 (Littles). Children’s lives are positively impacted through the one-to-one relationships with committed volunteer mentors and the professional support of our trained staff.

The United Way of the Midlands partners with the university to address community issues related to improving health, education and financial stability for individuals and families.
