USC to celebrate new College of Arts and Sciences

The University will celebrate its new College of Arts and Sciences with a series of public events April 4–10 that commemorate 200 years of arts and sciences education at USC.

Designed around the theme, "Think of the Possibilities," the celebration will highlight the merging of the arts and the sciences into a single college as when the University opened in 1805. Among the exhibits and lectures is a keynote address by Princeton historian Michael Mahoney at 7 p.m. April 6 in Rutledge Chapel on the Horseshoe.

Mahoney's talk, "The Web of Learning: Staying Real in the Virtual World," will address the growth of the Worldwide Web and how it has fostered a culture of instant knowledge and created a social community of computer scientists and historians. Mahoney is an expert in the history of science and a leading authority on the recent history of computing.

Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, who became dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in January when the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Mathematics were combined, said she wants the celebration to highlight the college's many facets, from research in USC's NanoCenter to outreach activities of USC's theatre program and Melton Observatory.

"Carolina's College of Arts and Sciences is the University's largest college and one in which every undergraduate student must take courses to earn a degree," Fitzpatrick said. "As a result, our faculty have an enormous opportunity to influence our students and impact their undergraduate studies. Through these events, we hope that the University community and the greater Columbia community will help us celebrate the richness of our college and our role in preparing students to excel in their chosen fields and to value the life of the mind."

Other events include a convocation for the College of Arts and Sciences from 3:30 to 5 p.m. April 7 on the Horseshoe, with a reception afterward.

All events are open to the public. For more information, go to www.cas.sc.edu or call Johnny Hakim at 7-7702.
