FURMAN ONCOLOGY RESEARCH TEAM
-NEW- Summer research opportunity in clinical medical research

Orientation: May 11 – May 14, 2009
Only 2 USC positions available
Stipends will be provided
This opportunity is a collaborative effort between Furman University, USC, and Greenville hospital and takes place in Greenville, SC.
Students will conduct retrospective studies of patient records (primarily oncology) aimed to improve current medical practice and assess the benefits/outcome of new procedures. Projects will be supervised by Greenville Hospital physicians and residents.
Students will be taught to work with patient records, pathology reports, and surgical notes; advanced knowledge is not necessary. Project will involve extensive computer work, database development, and statistical analysis; advanced knowledge is not necessary.

- Attendance at patient-management conferences
- Opportunity to observe surgical procedures
- Manuscript preparation & publication (will require additional hours during Fall academic semester to complete)
- Presentation of project at an end-of-session symposium
- Presentation at Discovery Day (following April)
- Participation in national medical conference presentations
Participants are expected to work full-time during the project period. Orientation attendance is also required.
