Continuing-ed programs sharpen skills

The University of South Carolina’s Office of Continuing Education and Conferences is expanding its programs to offer local residents the opportunity to advance their careers with affordable, applicable professional education and training options.

Programs range from one-day skill development courses to comprehensive certificate programs that allow participants to explore new and emerging professions or to enhance skills in their current employment field.

Featured programs include training for new and emerging green jobs, certificate programs in the legal and technology fields, and skill development training courses in business and communication, including Web development and design.

“The current offerings are designed to immediately impact employees and their organizations, and make career changers more marketable in the current economic environment,” Eric McGee, director of continuing and professional education, said. Training advisors are available to help individuals identify which programs may be right for them.

Moreover, McGee said, some offerings have been approved for workforce development (WIA) funding, including several of the Emerging and Sustainable Technology programs and the Paralegal Certificate program. “The financial aid option, along with several others, including continuing education student loans, make choosing one of the USC Professional Education Programs accessible and affordable for all,” he said.

Headlining the program expansion are the Emerging and Sustainable Technology (EST) training programs. Programs are available for all experience and skill levels, including those seeking entry into the Green building movement. Programs will include building design and construction opportunities with US Green Building Council LEED accreditation preparation and credentialing maintenance training programs. EST participants also will be able to earn a nationally recognized certificate in just one week with the BPI Energy Auditor and Analyst certificate program boot camp. A free Green Economy workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, to discuss opportunities in this industry.
