Jonathan Green to deliver Smalls lecture
Internationally know painter and printmaker Jonathan Green will present the 13th annual Robert Smalls Lecture at the University of South Carolina at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in Gambrell Hall, Room 153.
Titled “African American Art: Reflecting a Culture of a Place and Time,” the talk will focus on the important role that the arts play in reflecting and strengthening cultures. It is free and open to the public and will include a reception afterward.
Green was born and raised in the Gullah community of Gardens Corner in Beaufort County and is one of the state’s most celebrated artists. His art is part of museum collections throughout the country and in Germany.
A graduate of The School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Green has forged strong ties to USC during the past 20 years. In addition to organizing original and traveling exhibits with McKissick Museum, he has taught and collaborated with art students on printing projects and dance students with adaptation of his art to stage through a ballet. The University of South Carolina Press published his book, “Gullah Images: The Art of Jonathan Green,” reproducing 180 images of his paintings in color. In 1996, the university awarded Green an honorary doctor of fine arts degree.
The university’s African-American Studies Program established the Robert Smalls Lecture Series in 1997 to share the latest research and scholarship on African-American studies with the community. It is named for Robert Smalls, a South Carolina slave, Civil War hero and congressman who had a significant impact on South Carolina with his contributions to political, education and economic reform.
The Robert Smalls Lecture is sponsored by the university’s College of Arts and Sciences and the African-American Studies Program. For more information, call 803-777-7248, or visit the Web site: www.cas.sc.edu/AFRA/
