Top historian to visit USC, discuss Lincoln, slavery
One of the nation’s most prominent U.S. historians will visit the University of South Carolina Thursday, Feb. 25, to discuss Abraham Lincoln and American slavery as the university’s 2010 John G. Sproat Lecturer.
Dr. Eric Foner, the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, will speak at 7 p.m. in Gambrell Hall auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. Foner’s lecture, titled “The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery,” is sponsored by the department of history and the Institute for Southern Studies.
A prolific author, Foner’s research and books focus on the intersection between political and social history and the history of American race relations. His most recent book is “Our Lincoln: New Perspectives on Lincoln and His World,” released in 2008 by W.W. Norton & Company Inc. He also has written “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War” and “Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863 – 1877,” which earned the Bancroft Prize, the Parkman Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award.
His 2004 textbook, “Give Me Liberty! An American History,” and companion volume of documents, “Voices of Freedom,” is one of the most popular college texts in print. In addition, Foner has won top teaching awards from Columbia University and the New England History Teachers Association and is a frequent contributor to national print, radio and television.
The university’s John G. Sproat Lecture in American Political History honors the legacy of eminent American historian John G. “Jack” Sproat who served nine years, 1974-83, as chairman of the university’s history department and later as senior fellow in the Institute for Southern Studies, serving as general editor of the impressive Southern Classic Series.
