Haiti Relief Concert
Six Columbia-area bands will perform at a Haiti Relief Concert Friday, Feb. 5, at the University of South Carolina’s Carolina Coliseum.
The concert, a collaboration between colleges in the Midlands, the City of Columbia and local artists, will feature rock and hip hop music by Justin Smith and the Folk Hop Band, Li’l Brod, Modern Disruption, singer/songwriter Haley Dreis, Snook Da Rokk Star and Fat Rat Da Czar and Shekeese Da Beast. Hot 103.9 disc jockey Prince Ice will emcee.
Doors open at 4 p.m., and the concert runs from 5 – 10 p.m.
Tickets are general admission and cost $5, with proceeds benefitting the American Red Cross Haiti relief efforts. Tickets will go on sale Feb. 1, and will be available for purchase at the Carolina Coliseum box office, via phone at 803-251-2222, at all Capitol Tickets outlets and on the Web site: www.coliseum.sc.ed. Carolina students also will have the option of purchasing tickets with their Carolina Card, and all ticket buyers will have the opportunity to donate more than the $5 price.
“The Columbia music community came forward very quickly after the earthquake in Haiti and offered their talent to raise money,” said Jerry Brewer, associate vice president for student affairs. “The college community in the midlands is promoting the concert as a fundraiser to assist the American Red Cross in their work to help the Haitian people.
“I hope everyone can buy a ticket for the event, even if you can only attend for a few minutes, to support the fundraising efforts of the music community and the college community. The show is going to be great and helping the people of Haiti is the very worthwhile mission!”
An on-campus shuttle service will be available to Carolina students beginning at 4 p.m. until the concert’s conclusion. Route information will be available on the university’s Web site www.sc.edu.
Student organizations from the participating colleges (USC, Allen University, Benedict College, Columbia College and Newberry College) will host mini-fundraisers on the concourse of the coliseum during the concert; proceeds also will benefit the American Red Cross Haiti relief efforts.
