Free DVDs of “Planting Healthy Roots,” a documentary film about the creation of the Right Choice, Fresh Start Farmers’ Market in Orangeburg, are available.
The farmers’ market is the first in South Carolina – and among the first in the country – to partner with a federally qualified health center, Family Health Centers Inc. The goal of the market, which opened in June 2011, is to increase access to, and consumption of, healthy foods for people in rural areas while also increasing economic opportunity for small-scale rural farmers in the state.
Dr. Darcy Freedman, a USC College of Social Work researcher who led the effort to create the market, and Dr. Heather Brandt, a researcher in the Arnold School of Public Health, teamed up with Media Arts Professor Laura Kissel and two student filmmakers, Trey Murphy and Tim Jacobs, to produce the film. They relied on personal stories, community profiles and interviews.
