The Left Bank Big Band, an ensemble in the tradition of the great dance bands of the 1930s and the 1940s with a contemporary attitude, will give a concert at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 27, in the University of South Carolina’s School of Music recital hall.

Admission is free.

Led by Dr. Bert Ligon, director of jazz studies, the ensemble includes a mix of undergraduate and graduate music students playing flute, piano, bass, guitar, drums, vibraphone, trumpets, trombones and saxophones.

Among the pieces to be performed are “Shiny Stockings” and “Basically Blues” from one of the great dance bands of its era, the Count Basie Band; a Latin piece, “Samba de los Gatos;” and “Mr. Mayor,” described by Ligon, as “an extended contemporary composition that goes in several unexpected directions.”

For additional information, email Ligon at or contact the USC School of Music at 803-777-4280 or
