May Carolina will be a spring fling for alumni
Two full days is barely enough time for the University of South Carolina to showcase itself to alumni and friends for the popular May Carolina Alumni Weekened.
And, in fact, reunions, workshops, lectures, tours, and receptions Friday-Saturday, May 15-16, will be capped a day later by a Sunday evening concert and social. The Carolina Alumni Association is sponsoring the weekend of events.
"Returning to campus can always be special for alumni, if just for the stirring of memories a walk on the Horseshoe can create. But on alumni weekend, or May Carolina, as we call it, there is so much more to experience," says Marsha Cole, alumni association director. "We can go back to class without the pressure of quizzes, we can root for the Gamecocks at our new baseball stadium, and we can enjoy the company of classmates and our former teachers.
"What a perfect congruence of activities, experiences and emotions!”
Naturalist Rudy Mancke and aging expert Dr. Paul Eleazer are among the popular speakers.
Eleazer, director of the School of Medicine’s geriatrics department, whose will discuss the challenges and opportunities of aging in today’s society at 3:30 p.m. Friday, and Mancke, the state’s most famous naturalist, will discuss South Carolina’s natural world from the mountains to the sea at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Other weekend highlights include reunions and a party at the President’s House, a tour of the new Carolina baseball stadium and Newsplex, and talks on “Securing Your Home PC,” “Alternative Fuels – A Business Perspective,” and “Long Term Financial Planning.”
