USC to hold gospel music workshop, reunion concert

The University of South Carolina’s department of religious studies, in conjunction with the School of Music, will hold its first gospel music workshop Saturday, April 2, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the School of Music recital hall.

The event will feature gospel music clinics led by Dorris Massey Works, a performance by the Capital City Chorale and an alumni reunion concert by “A Touch of Faith,” the USC gospel choir.

The workshop is an interactive instructional experience for collegiate choirs, high-school choirs, church choirs and vocal artists.

General admission to the workshop is $25; $15 for students. A group rate will be offered to groups of 15 or less for $150. Tickets to the “A Touch of Faith” choir reunion concert will be $10 for adults and $7 for students. To purchase tickets to both events or to register for the workshop, visit http://saeu.sc.edu/reg/gospel.

Works, a musical educator in Richland County School District One, is a certified musical consultant specializing in African-American spiritual and gospel music. After earning her bachelor’s degree in music education from Benedict College and a master’s degree in education from Columbia College, Works has served as a vocal coach, choir trainer and songwriter for more than 30 years.

“A Touch of Faith” is a gospel choir formed as a branch of Student Christian Fellowship and has continued to grow into an award-winning collegiate gospel choir. Past directors have gone on to serve as directors of music in churches across the state and the Southeast. Many of its members are sought-after recording artists in the gospel genre. The rich history of “A Touch of Faith” has been incorporated into a new course offering in the School Of Music for the USC Gospel Choir.
