Theatre South Carolina presents ‘The Comedy of Errors’

Theatre South Carolina at USC keeps the comedy coming in its final main-stage production of the season with William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” April 15-23 at Drayton Hall.

Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for military, USC faculty, staff and seniors and $10 for students and will be sold at the Longstreet Theater box office.

Show times are 8 p.m. opening night and April 20-22, 7 p.m. on April 16, 3 p.m. on April 17 and 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on April 23. Half-price tickets will be available for the 11 p.m. performance.

Directed by Helen Hayes nominee Robert Richmond, associate professor in the department of theatre and dance, “The Comedy of Errors” follows Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio, to the foreign land of Ephesus, where they are mistaken for two others with the same names who turn out to be their identical twins. The play follows the sets of brothers as the mix-up leads to mayhem while their families and friends sort out the confusion.

Playing the roles of Antipholus will be senior theater major Jeffrey Earl and Joe Mallon, a first-year MFA student in acting. The roles of Dromio will be played by freshman theater major Liam McDougall and sophomore theater major William Vaughn. Also in the production are Andy Hernandez, Samuel Kinsman, Jessi Noel, Catherine Friesen, Yvonne Senat, Amanda Forstrom and Don Russell -- all first-year MFA students in acting -- and senior theater majors John Rhodes and Sam Traquina.

Richmond directed “The Comedy of Errors” for the Aquila Theatre Company at the East 13th Street Theatre in New York City in 2002. The production toured the country from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s.

In 2005, a review in the Los Angeles Times called the production “unmistakable fun,” adding that it “invites the mind to play.”
