School of Music announces March recitals, performances

The University of South Carolina’s School of Music will present several performances, as well as its band and ensemble concerts, for March. All events are free and open to the public and will be held in the School of Music recital hall, 813 Assembly St.

Faculty and guest artist recitals:

March 17—7:30 p.m.
The CORE Ensemble guest recital
The Core Ensemble has commissioned many of today’s finest composers for new works, featuring the unique instrumental combination of cello, piano and percussion. Many of these works have been funded by the most prestigious commissioning programs in the United States. CD recordings have been released on the New World, Albany and Centaur labels. The ensemble includes Tahirah Whittington (cello), Hugh Hinton (piano) and Michael Parola (percussion).

March 31—7:30 p.m.
Joseph Rackers faculty piano recital

Bands and ensemble performances:

March 24—7:30 p.m.
Palmetto Pans Steel Drums Concert
—The Palmetto Pans is a steel drum band devoted to performing the music of Trinidad and Tobago as well as island classics and popular music. The group consists of 12-18 members coming from various academic disciplines throughout the university and community. The musicians perform on 55-gallon oil drums that have been transformed into musical instruments.

USC Percussion Ensemble recital
