Charles Bolden to speak at USC Tuesday

NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr. will be the guest speaker for the 2010-2011 Heyward E. McDonald Lecture Series on Peace and Justice Tuesday, Jan.18, at the University of South Carolina.

Bolden’s talk, “The Role of Public Education in Advancing Social Justice,” is set for 7 p.m. in the Russell House ballroom A/B. His talk will be followed by a question and answer period and is free and open to the public.

Bolden also will meet with students at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Russell House, Room 203. This meeting is open to all students.

A Columbia native, Bolden became the 12th administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2009, capping off a 34-year career with the U.S. Marine Corps that included 14 years as a member of NASA’s Astronaut Office. He is a graduate of Columbia’s C.A. Johnson High School and the U.S Naval Academy.

The Heyward E. McDonald Lecture Series on Peace and Justice was established in 2002 by the Presbyterian Student Assn. to honor the late Heyward McDonald of Columbia, who served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and the State Senate.

A Winnsboro native, McDonald was also a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the USC School of Law. Diagnosed with polio in 1953, he is credited with ensuring passage of the first piece of legislation in the state for assuring architectural access for the disabled community. He also was instrumental in the passage of the 1984 Educational Improvement Act. At the time of his death in 2000, he was widely recognized for his commitment to building a civil society and peace and justice.
