Defense expert to discuss Gen Y, world politics
Peter Warren Singer, one of the world’s leading experts on changes in 21st-century warfare, will discuss the relationship between Generation Y and the future of world politics Thursday, Jan. 20, at the University of South Carolina.
Singer is director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative at the Brookings Institution. His lecture, titled “Millennial World: The Future of Geopolitics and America in the Age of Generation Y,” will take place at 7 p.m. in Lumpkin Auditorium of the Darla Moore School of Business. The event is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Walker Institute for International and Area Studies.
Singer says he plans to shed light on how some of the massive changes that are reshaping world politics -- rise of China, global climate shift and emergence of cyberwar -- are happening at the same time that America is experiencing demographic shifts in everything from ethnicity to religion, regional political power and the economy.
“The new generation of kids, the Millennials, see the world differently, having grown up in a world of everything from 9-11 to Google,” said Singer. “They’re greater in population size than the Baby Boomer generation and three times the size of Generation X. The most fundamental shifts you can imagine in the world, in America and in our identities are all happening at once, each influencing and shaping each other.”
Singer, the youngest scholar named senior fellow in Brookings’ 90-year history, wrote the 2009 book, “Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century.” In 2005, he was named to CNN’s “New Guard -- List of the Next Generation of Newsmakers.” He was coordinator of the Obama-08 campaign’s defense policy task force and, in 2009, was named by Foreign Policy magazine to the “Top 100 Global Thinkers List.”
Singer’s public lecture kicks off a year of special events to commemorate the Walker Institute’s 50th anniversary. For more information, contact the Walker Institute at 803-777-8180, or visit the webpage www.cas.sc.edu/iis/
