ESPN-U to feature new McGuire scholarship

The Frank and Frankie McGuire Endowed Scholarship at the University of South Carolina will be featured on ESPN-U’s “SEC Weekly Academic Special Show” that will air at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27.

The scholarship, named after the legendary Gamecock basketball coach and his son, was created this fall to provide funds for students enrolled in CarolinaLIFE, a two-year post-secondary education experience for students with intellectual and cognitive disabilities. McGuire’s son, Frankie, could have qualified for the program in his youth.

One of the main objectives of CarolinaLIFE -- “LIFE” is an acronym for “Learning Is For Everyone”-- is to make sure its students have a more traditional college experience. CarolinaLIFE students attend University 101 and audit classes in areas that interest them.

ESPN producers interviewed former USC trustee Donald Bailey, whose son is a student in CarolinaLIFE, as well as Frank McGuire’s daughter, Carol Ann McGuire Morgan, and USC College of Education dean Dr. Les Sternberg.

The ESPN-U program features news stories from all 12 universities in the Southeastern Conference.
