Journalist Yvonne Latty to deliver Glover lecture
Writer and journalist Yvonne Latty will deliver the University of South Carolina’s annual Adrenée Glover Freeman Lecture in African American Women’s Studies Thursday, Nov. 4, focusing on the lives and circumstances of women who serve in the armed forces.
The lecture, titled “Women Who Serve,” is set for 7 p.m. in the School of Law auditorium and is free and open to the public.
Latty is director of the Reporting New York and Reporting the Nation programs at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. A native of South Harlem, Latty calls herself a storyteller.
Her books include “In Conflict: Iraq War Veterans Speak Out on Duty, Loss and the fight to Stay Alive” (2006) and the critically acclaimed “We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, from World War II to the War in Iraq” (2004). Her non-fiction short stories have been published in “It’s a Girl: Women Writers on Raising Daughters,” “The African American History Bibliography” and “Callaloo,” the premiere African-American literary magazine.
“In Conflict” was adapted for theater and premiered at Temple University in 2007. The production, which has since played off Broadway and at theater festivals, has earned several awards for its moving presentation of unheard voices and experiences and personal photographs of 25 Iraq War veterans.
The Freeman lecture, one of the premiere lectureships in the College of Arts and Sciences, was established in 1993 in memory of Adrenée Glover Freeman, a Columbia attorney who was active in civic affairs and served on the Community Advisory Board of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. The lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and the African American Studies Program.
