The South Carolina Political Collections
University Libraries established the South Carolina Political Collections (SCPC) in 1991 to document S.C. government and politics at the national, state and local levels in the post-World War II era.
The SCPC makes the papers and records of the Palmetto State’s leaders in Congress and the General Assembly, the state’s political parties and other individuals and organizations with substantive roles in politics and government available to scholars and others studying contemporary government and society.
The most important repository of its kind in the state of South Carolina, the SCPC features the papers of 23 former and current members of Congress, 11 governors and prominent leaders in the state legislature. Holdings include manuscripts, photographs, electronic records and audio/video recordings. An extensive oral history program supplements the documentary record.
The SCPC’s collections are among the largest received by the university. They include materials from U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and former senators Hollings and Olin Johnston; former U.S. congressional members Butler Derrick, Bryan Dorn, Liz Patterson, Joe Wilson and Floyd Spence; Gov. Mark Sanford and former governors James Edwards, Robert McNair, Richard Riley, John C. West and Carroll Campbell; former U.S. ambassadors Richard Walker and David Wilkins; political activists Drake Edens, Donald Fowler and Modjeska Simkins; journalists Jack Bass and William Workman; editorial cartoonists Walt Lardner and Kate Salley Palmer; and organizations such as the state Democratic and Republic parties and the League of Women Voters.
The Hollings Library will increase access for students, faculty and others to the collections. It will include the Smith Reading Room, an area that is designed for research, and an exhibit gallery that is 10 times larger than its previous exhibit space and will enable SCPC staff to mount semi-permanent and rotating exhibits. Details on the SCPC and its exhibits are available at the website: www.sc.edu/library/scpc.
