Continued: Ballet
Stacey Calvert, USC Dance associate director and a former soloist with the NYCB, will lead the concert as creative director. Music for the concert will be performed by the USC Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Donald Portnoy.
“‘Ballet Stars’ is a great opportunity for Columbia dance lovers who may not have the opportunity to travel to New York to see a very special brand of world-class talent right here in our city,” said Calvert.
The concert repertoire will include “Stars and Stripes” and “Mozartiana” by choreographer George Balanchine and “Herman Schmerman Pas de Deux” by choreographer William Forsythe.
Last year’s concert featured the pas de deux movement from “Stars and Stripes.” This year, the entire “Stars and Stripes” ballet will be performed.
“Stars and Stripes” will feature a cast of 35, including Mearns, Ulbricht and Angle dancing solo roles. Senior dance majors Olivia Anderson and Bonnie Boiter-Jolley will also perform solo roles. “Mozartiana” will feature Mearns, Angle and Ulbrecht, as well as four young dancers from the SC Dance Conservatory under the tutelage of Stacey Calvert. “Herman Schmerman Pas de Deux” will feature Whelan and Evans.
