USC Dance Company to present ‘Innovative Works’

The USC Dance Company will present “Innovative Works,” an evening of original ballet compositions, Feb. 11 – 13 at Drayton Hall theatre.

All shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 for the public, $14 for military and USC faculty and staff and $10 for students and are available at the Carolina Coliseum box office. Or, charge by phone at 803-251-2222.

Guest choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall will premiere her theatrical dance work, “Cinderella at the Bar,” which she developed with the USC Dance Company.

“This piece began with my interest in the relationship of beauty and identity and how they are influenced and appropriated by popular culture,” said Rowlson-Hall. “Because of the limited time frame for creation, the development of the work was greatly influenced by the dancers and their responses to these ideas. Writing assignments and improvisational exercises allowed me to see the students’ relationship to culture and identity, most significantly when one student wrote, ‘When I was little, I thought I’d grow up to be Barbie.’ The juxtaposition of that sense of naïve optimism against a deconstruction of cultural archetypes creates a tension for the audience to rethink perceptions about the value of beauty.”
