Holiday concerts 2009

 

A number of winter holiday concerts will be performed on or near campus this year, and many of them are free.

Here's a sampling:

Nov. 20 School of Music: "Life, Loss, Love: Music from the Renaissance to the 21st Century," University Chorus, directed by Joseph Modica and accompanied by Rosemarie Suniga. 7:30 p.m., St. Andrews Baptist Church, free.

Nov. 22 School of Music: Palmetto Concert Band, 4 p.m., Koger Center for the Arts, free.

Nov. 29 School of Music: Governor's All Star Chorus and Carolighting, 6 p.m., Statehouse steps, free.

Nov. 29 Colonial Life Arena: Trans-Siberian Orchestra Winter Tour 2009, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, go to www.coloniallifearena.com.

Dec. 1 School of Music: Jazz faculty recital, Bert Ligon, piano, and Craig Butterfield, double bass, 7:30 p.m., School of Music, Recital Hall, free.

Dec. 3 School of Music: Graduate Vocal Ensemble, 5:30 p.m., School of Music, Recital Hall, free.

Dec. 3 School of Music: An Evening of Chamber Music, 7:30 p.m., School of Music, Recital Hall, free.

Dec. 4 School of Music: USC String Project Winter Concert, 5:30 p.m., School of Music, Recital Hall, free.

Dec. 4 School of Music: Graduate String Quartet, 7:30 p.m., School of Music, Recital Hall, free.

Dec. 4 and 6 School of Music: USC Concert Choir, annual Christmas concert, featuring works by Palestrina, Mendelssohn, Parry, and Woo. 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4, First Presbyterian Church, and 6 p.m. Dec. 6, Shandon University Methodist Church, free.

Dec. 7 School of Music: Congaree New Horizons Band Christmas Concert, 7 p.m., new Band and Dance Building, 324 Sumter St., free.

Dec. 8 School of Music: "Christmas Traditions," Colla Voce, directed by Larry Wyatt and accompanied by Ann Wilson. Guest organist will be Mark Husey. 7:30 p.m., St. Peter's Catholic Church. Tickets are $10, available at the door.

Dec. 16 Trinity Cathedral: Midday series, Community Carol Sing, 12:30 p.m. Averyt Hall, Sumter at Senate streets. Cathedral is located at 1100 Sumter St., adjacent to University campus, downtown Columbia. Half-hour concert is free; lunch is available for purchase.

Dec. 18 Sandlapper Singers: “American Graces Christmas Concert,” more than 100 voices from Satchel Ford Elementary School, Crayton Middle School, and the Falcon Singers from A.C. Flora High School sing Christmas songs joined by the Sandlapper Singers instrumental ensemble. 7:30 p.m., Dreher High School Auditorium, 3319 Millwood Ave. Reception follows concert.
