Independent film, 'My Sweet Misery,' has ties to university
“My Sweet Misery,” the award-winning independent film, features a director and several cast members with connections to the University of South Carolina.
Alumnus Matthew William Jordan directed the film, which kicked off Carmike’s annual nationwide independent film series.
The film will premiere nationally Friday, Nov. 6, at the Carmike 14 in Harbison. It will also be shown Nov. 7, 10 and 12. Show times are 1:40 p.m., 4:20 p.m., 7:10 and 9:35.
Zach Hanks, a 2004 graduate of the university’s master’s program in fine arts, stars as Sam. Anna Chlumsky, famous for her role opposite Macaulay Culkin in the popular 1991 film, “My Girl,” plays Chloe. Professor of acting Richard Jennings plays the role of Jake, and several other alumni have roles in the film.
“Several undergraduate students worked with the film,” said Jennings. “It was fun being able to work professionally with my students.”
The film, a mixture of dark comedy and character-driven drama, involves a man haunted by a past that is coming full circle in strange and surreal ways. Other broken eccentrics include his sociopathic brother and two mysterious women, one malevolent and one benevolent.
Gary Wolcott, also known as “Mr. Movie,” reviewed the film for the Tri-City Herald of Richland, Wash., and gave it 4 ½ stars and wrote, “Outside of ‘Star Trek’ and Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ it will likely be the most fun you’ll have in a theater all year.” He also wrote that, “‘My Sweet Misery’ gives Carmike’s series a nice jump start. It takes the boredom of the well-worn premise of marriage break-up to brand new places. Jordan’s film puts a unique spin on dialogue, highlights the story with some inventive cinematography and one outrageous twist after another.”
“My Sweet Misery” has already won the award for best cinematography at the Charlotte Film Festival and is the top selection at film festivals in Charlotte, Orlando and Southern California.
