Carolina-Clemson blood drive is Nov. 16-20

The 25th-annual Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive will be held Nov. 16-20 on both campuses. All students, faculty, staff, alumni, and fans are encouraged to participate.

In Columbia, blood donations can be made in the Russell House Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Greene Street blood mobile will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The blood mobile outside of the Moore School of Business will be open Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The blood mobile outside the Colonial Life Arena will be open Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

All blood donors at Carolina will get a commemorative long-sleeve T-shirt and a variety of free food. The coveted blood drive trophy will be awarded to the winning team at the game on Nov. 28 at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Our committees have been working very hard alongside the American Red Cross, to make the 25th anniversary of the blood drive a great success,” said Mindi Thommes, Carolina’s head chair of external affairs for the Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive. “Last year, we had great support from the school and community. We would like to exceed our total donors from last year and beat Clemson.”

The Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive is held annually the week before the Carolina/Clemson football game. The drive comes at the start of the holiday season when the blood supply typically weakens. During the past 24 years of competition, the universities have collected more than 80,000 units of blood, potentially saving more than 240,000 lives. The Carolina contingent has donated about 40,000 units of blood for this highly anticipated event and took home the trophy last year.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet height and weight requirements.
