University names top researchers to CoEE leadership

The University of South Carolina has named three leading researchers to lead Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE) aimed at creating jobs and new opportunities for South Carolinians.

Dr. Simon Hudson, a professor of tourism and marketing at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business in Canada, has been named the CoEE Endowed Chair of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. Hudson also will be director of the CoEE in Tourism and Economic Development and will join the university’s faculty in the College of Hotel, Restaurant and Sport Management in January.

Dr. Anton Jochen Lauterbach, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Delaware, will be the CoEE Endowed Chair for Strategic Environmental Approaches to Electricity Production from Coal. Lauterbach, who will join the university’s faculty at the College of Engineering and Computing in August 2010, also will be the director of the CoEE in Strategic Approaches to the Production of Electricity from coal.

Dr. Steve Blair, an Arnold School of Public Health researcher recognized internationally for his studies on physical activity and health, will be co-director of the CoEE Technology Center to Enhance Healthful Lifestyles. Blair and Dr. Carolyn Jenkins of MUSC’s College of Nursing will lead the center until two scientists are recruited.

University President Harris Pastides said the selection of Hudson and Lauterbach came after international searches.

“Dr. Hudson is an expert on the marketing of tourism, so his areas of interest are a perfect match for our state, where tourism is the No. 1 industry,” Pastides said. “His research will be vital in making tourism a stronger economic force in the state.”

Lauterbach is a well-known chemical engineer whose research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as industries such as Ford Motor Co., Union Carbide, AlliedSignal, Shell and Toyota.
