Longstreet Theatre stage set for ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’

“Cyrano de Bergerac,” the legendary story of the long-nosed, hero for all seasons, will be the University of South Carolina dept. of Theatre SC debut production for 2009 – 10. The play will run Sept. 25 – Oct. 4 in Longstreet Theatre.

Anthony Cochrane, a former member of The Royal Shakespeare Company and a veteran stage actor, will play the role of the iconic Cyrano, while the rest of the cast and crew consists entirely of undergraduates.

Sophomore Carley Peace of Lexington, SC has composed and will perform original music for the show.

“This speaks to the high caliber of talent possessed by our undergraduates,” said visiting Prof. of Acting Robert Richmond, who will direct his own adaptation of French poet and dramatist Edmond Rostand’s play, adding that Peace’s demanding role is typically reserved for graduate students.

Richmond’s adaptation incorporates Longstreet’s unique features and will be the first main-stage production in the theater in more than a year.

In the hilarious and touching tale, the large-nosed Cyrano uses his intelligence and skill at swordplay to help a comrade win the heart of the fair Roxanne, whom Cyrano secretly desires.

Show times are 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, and Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2. Saturday performances – Sept. 26 and Oct. 3 – will take place at 7 p.m., with a bonus late-night, half-price showing at 11 p.m. on the first Saturday. Also, a 3 p.m. show will take place Oct. 4.

Ticket prices are $16 for the public; $14 for university faculty, staff and the military; $10 for students.
