School of Music notes for May

May 15----“Light the Way” concert, “Waltzing with Williams and Wyatt.” 7:30 p.m., School of Music recital hall. The final concert in the 2008-09 “Light the Way with Music and Art” series benefiting the homeless. This concert is presented in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Music and is co-sponsored by the Midlands Interfaith Homelessness Action Council. Donations of $10 are suggested. All proceeds benefit the Homeless Transition Center.

Band ensembles -- Recitals and concerts featuring University of South Carolina musicians and alumni. Concerts are free and open to the public. For additional information, contact the Band Office at 803-777-4278.

May 24----Palmetto Concert Band Memorial Day concert. 4 p.m., Koger Center for the Arts. The Palmetto Concert Band features professional and semi-professional musicians from South Carolina. Many of the band members are alumni of the School of Music. Jim Copenhaver, director of bands, and William Moody, distinguished professor emeritus of music, direct the ensemble.

A Look Ahead to June . . .

June 7 – 13----The Southeastern Piano Festival----The Southeastern Piano Festival provides training for outstanding young pianists and offers a showcase of piano performances with celebrated and new artists. Twenty young pianists are chosen and receive daily private lessons with faculty members of the University of South Carolina, participate in master classes with a guest artist and are offered opportunities to perform in the setting of a professional concert. June 21 – 26---- Band Camp
The School of Music offers a band camp for students in grades 7 – 12. Instruction for drum major, marching percussion, symphonic band and symphonic percussion is available. Contact the Band Office at 803-777-4278, or e-mail USCBand@mozart.sc.edu for more information.

Carolina Summer Music Conservatory
School of Music faculty lead high-school students in an intensive, one-week session that focuses on individual performance and chamber music. Activities include master classes with university faculty and professional musicians, chamber-music coaching and private lessons. Students select from courses in music history, music theory, auditioning and jazz improvisation. Evening concerts featuring faculty are free. String Project summer camp
The university’s String Project offers an annual summer camp for string-music students in grades 3 – 12. Camp features daily group music instruction and a finale concert. Faculty members include experienced teachers from the community and music-education majors from the university. It is open to all students who have completed one year of instruction.
