First Y'ALL winners: You guys were great
Now that the second-annual Y’ALL (Young Alumni Leaving a Legacy) Campaign is at hand, the first co-winners to be the Face of Y’ALL competition say they’ll miss representing their fellow alumni.
"The opportunity to represent Gamecock young alumni has been a wonderful experience."
Joey Bowers, of Summerville, S.C., is a former Gamecock kicker from 2003-2004 who is completing the first of a two-year judicial clerkship with a U.S. District Judge in Charleston. Bowers graduated cum laude in public relations with the Class of 2004, then earned his law degree from the University last year.
“This position has also given me the ability to participate in other alumni objectives. I recently moved to Charleston, and have been able to work with other alumni in the area to create more alumni events,” Bowers says.
Emily Stowe Leaphart, of Leesville, S.C., is public relations coordinator for the Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative. During her time at South Carolina, she was just a bit “cockier” than the rest, competing for and winning the role of Cocky, the University mascot, as a junior. Her first two years, she played trumpet in the marching band.
"Being the Face of Y'ALL has afforded me the opportunity to do some great things,” Leaphart says. “It's hard to pick one favorite highlight, but I think being on the field for the pregame festivities during the Georgia game would be my favorite. It brought back some wonderful college memories and was great to be on the field again."
"The opportunity to represent Gamecock young alumni has been a wonderful experience,” Bowers agrees. “It has been an honor to both represent and work with the young alumni for the past year, and I look forward to finishing out my term and finding new ways to get involved with Carolina’s alumni community."
Stowe Leaphart and Bowers will be remembered for establishing a high bar of performance for the first-ever Face of the Y’ALL Campaign.
"It's always special to be the ‘start’ of something new,” Stowe Leaphart says. “This campaign is off to an award-winning start and I hope that many more young alumni will follow the lead that Joey and I have set forth. I understand the importance of giving to the University and I hope I can continue to be a University supporter for many years in the future."
