Short film, ‘Dreadful Sorry,’ features USC cast, crew

University of South Carolina theater director and Helen Hayes Award nominee Robert Richmond is heading up the production of the post-Civil War ghost story, “Dreadful Sorry.”

The short film, written by screen writer Dionne O’Dell, was inspired by the legend of the Huguenot ghost, Gauche, who is said to haunt The Castle on 411 Craven St. in Beaufort, S.C.

“Dreadful Sorry,” which takes its name from the last line of the western folk ballad, “Oh My Darling, Clementine,” is being filmed at the Robert Mills House in Columbia.

In “Dreadful Sorry,” Gauche appears as a gardener who befriends 10-year-old Lily Reece. Gauche aids Lily’s memory as she returns to the plantation and struggles to remember the dreadful event of her mother’s death.

Richmond, associate professor in the department of theatre and dance, was awarded the 2010 South Carolina Film Commission grant to produce the 15-minute film. “Dreadful Sorry” is the fourth film to receive the grant.

The movie is a collaborative effort of the South Carolina Film Commission, USC Partner in Film Production, City of Columbia, USC’s College of Arts and Sciences and the department of theatre and dance.

Several notable Hollywood industry professionals are also lending their talents to “Dreadful Sorry.” They include celebrated photographer Dan Kneece and producers Worth Keeter and Phil Smoot.

Two USC theater faculty are working on the film. Technical director and theater instructor Andy Mills is serving as art director, and assistant professor Walter Clissen is sound mixer.

Actors include Richard Sheridan Willis as Conrad, Louis Butelli as Gauche, Madeleine Hamer as Victoria, and Liza Hunter as Lily.

Media-arts students are apprenticing as production assistants, and theater students are appearing in supporting acting roles.

“Dreadful Sorry” is expected to be released next summer.
