'Responsibility of public journalism' lecture is set

Charles Bierbauer, dean of USC’s College of Mass Communication and Information Studies, will deliver the final lecture in a series on civility Monday, Nov. 22.

Bierbauer will discuss civil discourse and the responsibility of public journalism at 7 p.m. in the Gressette Room of Harper College. It is open and free to the public. USC offered the lecture series this semester in conjunction with the University 201 class, “Civility in the Public Sphere,” which is being taught by philosophy professor Dr. Christopher Tollefsen.

The intent of the series is to encourage the community to think about the importance of, and problems with, civil discourse and how these problems can be resolved. Topics have included civility as it relates to healthcare, immigration reform, war, abortion and the proper role of government in Americans’ personal lives.

More detailed information on the USC’s Civil Discourse Initiative is available online at http://president.sc.edu/Civil_Discourse.
