Media advisory: VP Biden on campus for dedication

The University of South Carolina will dedicate The Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library at noon Friday, July 23. Vice President Joe Biden will be the keynote speaker; Sen. Fritz Hollings and U.S. Rep. James Clyburn also will speak.

The event, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, will be in Thomas Cooper Library on the main level, next to the entrance to the Hollings Library.

Reporters planning to cover the Friday, July 23, dedication MUST call Peggy Binette, Frenché Brewer or Margaret Lamb in USC’s Office of Media Relations at 803-777-5400 NO LATER than 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 21. To cover the event, all reporters, photographers and technical staff must present official media credentials from the outlet they represent.

Media instructions for television/satellite trucks

Television satellite trucks can park on Greene Street in front of Thomas Cooper Library.

Crews can lay cable between 6 and 9 p.m. Thursday, July 22, and 5 – 5:30 a.m. Friday, July 23. Technical assistance from the university will be available during that time. Access will be restricted after 5:30 a.m.

Cable run will be 500 feet through the far-right front door of the library. Any outlet that cannot meet this requirement must call the Office of Media Relations by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 21.

All broadcast cameras, tripods and other equipment must be in place by 8:30 a.m. Friday, July 23. Cameras will be on a two-tier, 4-foot-by-20-foot riser (12 and 18 inches in height) directly facing the stage no more than 40 feet away. Mult boxes will be available. All media must be stationary throughout the event.

Media instructions for radio/print

Parking for other broadcast and print media will be on Level 4 (ground level) in the South Bull Street garage, accessible through the Gate 3 entrance of the garage.

Doors for media will open at 9 a.m. and close at 11:30 a.m. Media should check in at the media table outside the front entrance to the library. All media will be stationary throughout the event.

Interviews and library visuals

Biden will not be available for interviews. We will provide updates on availability for Hollings and Clyburn. The Office of Media Relations can provide still photographs and raw b-roll footage of the building, exhibitions, as well as interviews with Library Dean Tom McNally and directors of the library collections.
