Biden to participate in Hollings Library dedication

It’s official: Vice President Joe Biden will visit the University of South Carolina in July.

Biden will be the keynote speaker at the dedication of the new Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library on July 23. The event will feature a number of dignitaries and elected officials, including Hollings and U.S. Rep. James Clyburn.

Admission to the event is by invitation only.

University President Harris Pastides said university leaders are honored that the vice president will be part of the dedication ceremony.

“We are honored that Vice President Biden has chosen to join us for this very special occasion in the life of our university,” Pastides said. “Vice President Biden and Senator Hollings have a long and enduring friendship. His presence and his remarks will be a fitting tribute to Senator Hollings and symbolic for the special collections library as it celebrates the new home for its South Carolina Political Collections.”

Hollings and Biden served together in the Senate for 32 years until Hollings’ retirement in 2005. During that time, their desks were next to each other on the Senate floor, and the two became close friends. Biden has visited the Palmetto State many times over the years.

The Hollings library, which is connected to the Thomas Cooper Library by a glass-enclosed walkway, was completed in June. In addition to the S.C. Political Collections, the $18 million, 50-000-square-foot facility will house the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections and Digital Collections.
