Palmetto Concert Band presents Memorial Day Tribute
The Palmetto Concert Band will hold its annual Memorial Day Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 31, in the Koger Center for the Arts.
Admission is free and open to the public.
The concert will be conducted by James K. Copenhaver, Director of Bands and USC Professor of Music, and William J. Moody, USC Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus.
Selections to be played include:
"Lincoln Portrait" by Aaron Copland
"The Sound of Music" by Richard Rogers
"Armed Forces Salute" arranged by Bob Lowden
"The Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa
Now in its 12th season, the Palmetto Concert Band performs each year at the University of South Carolina Concert Band Clinic in February; the Memorial Day Concert honoring members and veterans of the U.S. armed forces; a “Concert in the Park” in June; and the annual concert on Sunday before Thanksgiving.
The Palmetto Concert Band was organized in January 1999 and comprises professional and semi-professional musicians from throughout the Carolinas and Georgia. Most of its members are alumni of the University of South Carolina School of Music, and more than half of its members are public school band directors.

About the conductors:
James K. Copenhaver, Co-Conductor of the Palmetto Concert Band, is Director of Bands and a Professor of Music at the University of South Carolina. He has served on the USC School of Music faculty since 1976. His university concert bands have performed at conventions of the National MENC, the CBDNA Southern Division, and The American Bandmasters Association.
William J. Moody, Co-Conductor of the Palmetto Concert Band, is a Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. He was Director of the School of Music at the University of South Carolina from 1973-1990. He has previously served as a public school music teacher, Director of Bands at the University of Southern Mississippi, and Director of Bands and Vice Chairman of the Department of Music at the University of Texas-Austin.
