Give It Up for Good
Give It Up for Good is an annual program run by University Housing to divert material from the landfill, educate students about recycling and reuse, and make a positive impact on the Columbia community. Donations of clothing, household goods, furniture, appliances and food are collected in the residence halls and in Greek Village from students as they move out of the residence halls at the end of each semester. Food is donated directly to Harvest Hope, a local food bank. Other items are sold at a yard sale to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Since beginning the program in 2001, Housing has diverted over 300 tons of material from the landfill.
Since 2012, a sale of the donated items has been held each May to raise money for a Habitat for Humanity project. In 2014, we added a mid-year sale to the program. Combined, these sales have raised $31,789.60 and funded 2 completed Habitat home rehabs. Another project with Habitat for Humanity is planned for Fall 2015.
