Undergraduate Research
We help Capstone Scholars get involved in undergraduate research through a variety of options. The DISCOVER program is a 8-week not-for-credit seminar open to first-year students in any major. This program will help you gain some of these basic research skills and techniques (including helping you find a faculty member to work with) but you will not conduct a research project. DISCOVER meets once per week for one hour. Furthermore, Capstone Scholars are eligible to apply for the $3,000 Magellan Scholars Award as well as the $1,000 mini-grant to fund undergraduate research. To date, over 30 Capstone Scholars have won the Magellan Scholars Award over the course of the past 4 years. A new research opportunity for Capstone Scholars is the newly formed Magellan Apprentice for Capstone Scholars. The Magellan Apprentice program funds Capstone Scholars' research projects, specifically introductory research projects. Scholars interested in the program will work with the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) to find a faculty mentor and create a project application to submit for review. Scholars may be awarded up to $2,000 to be used for a salary, materials, and supplies. More information can be found at http://www.sc.edu/our/capstone.shtml
