Dr. Patrick Hickey

Patrick Hickey is the Faculty Principal of the Capstone Scholars Program and holds a Joint Appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor in the College of Nursing. Patrick received a Nursing Degree from St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, his BSN from Corpus Christi State University in Corpus Christi, Texas and his MS, MSN, and Dr. P.H. degrees from the University of South Carolina. Patrick grew up in Almonte, Ontario, Canada (birthplace of the Inventor of Basketball – Dr. James Naismith) and is both a proud Canadian as well as an American citizen. Patrick has been a nurse for 36 years and has worked in all facets of nursing to include medical-surgical, critical care, emergency room, and operating room. Patrick has lived in the United States for 33 years; with the past 23 years being in Columbia, SC. Patrick has been a member of the USC Faculty for the past 7 years and Principal of the Capstone Scholars Program for the past 4 years. Patrick has introduced Personal Challenge into the Capstone Scholars Program as a direct result of his quest to successfully climb and summit the highest mountain on each continent. When he stood on top of Mt. Everest (May 24, 2007) he became the first nurse in the world to climb the 7 Summits of the World and joined, at that time, only 100 people in the world that had attained this lofty goal! Patrick is passionate about travel and adventure, and he and wife Carol have backpacked throughout 57 countries during three year-long trips around the world. Patrick loves to mentor, open doors of opportunity, and set students up to succeed!

David DeWeil is the Associate Principal of the Capstone Scholars Program. David received a M.Ed. in Higher Education & Student Affairs and a B.A. in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina. He grew up in the Anderson/Greenville area of South Carolina and has lived in Columbia for the past 15 years. David enjoys teaching University 101 and University 290, meeting with students, managing student grant opportunities, and recruiting new students to the University. He also enjoys reading, watching college football and soccer, eating too many donuts, being involved at Columbia Presbyterian Church, and spending time with his lovely wife and two children.

Theresa Harrison

Theresa Harrison is the Assistant Principal of the Capstone Scholars Program. She was born and raised in Cleveland, TN, but has spent the past two years in Columbia, SC. She earned a B.S. in Biology and Psychology from East Tennessee State University in 2007, and a M.S. in Counseling and School Psychology with an Emphasis in Student Affairs from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2010. In her free time, she enjoys watching and playing sports, art museums, and cultural events. Her hobbies include reading, antiquing and traveling! Theresa is involved with Columbia Opportunity Resource and St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Erin Wilson

Erin Wilson is the Assistant Principal of the Capstone Scholars Program. She earned an M.Ed. in Higher Education & Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina and a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies (she created her own major) from The Ohio State University. Erin is a proud Tex-Ohioan who loves the outdoors: running, camping, farming, biking, SCUBA diving, or simply reading a good book on hot summer day. Some of her favorite hobbies include baking and cooking, gardening, cross-stitching, watching collegiate football, and arguing the finer points of science fiction and photography.

Sammy Easby, Capstone Scholars Program Graduate Assistant

Sammy Easby is the graduate assistant for Capstone Scholars and is in the process of earning her M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina. Sammy went to the University of Richmond for her undergrad earning a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Studies and a Business Administration minor. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, attending concerts, and watching and playing sports. Her hobbies include reading, dancing (badly), and eating at as many different restaurants as possible.

Taylor King, Capstone Scholars Program Graduate Assistant

Taylor King is a graduate assistant for Capstone Scholars and is in the process of earning her M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina. Taylor is a native of Collierville, TN, a suburb of Memphis. She received her Bachelors degree in Philosophy and Religion from Mississippi State University where she invested most of her time working with student programs, organizations, and initiatives. She enjoys time spent with good food and good friends, simple joys such as candles, string lights, and mint sweet tea, and finding ways to help students love their college experience.

Michelle Simon, Capstone Scholars Program Graduate Assistant

Michelle Simon is a graduate assistant for the Capstone Scholars program and is working toward her M. Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs. During her undergraduate years at Penn State, she studied Spanish, Media Studies, and International Studies. After graduating, Michelle taught English in Prague, Czech Republic and later worked in global education in Washington, D.C. Some of her hobbies include Pilates, trying new foods, traveling, and salsa dancing.
