St. Gallen is located in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, close to the Austrian and German border. The city is surrounded by beauty with its location between the Swiss Alps and Lake Constance. Because of the country's central location, you will find different people from different cultures moving back and forth from Northern and Southern Europe. Switzerland is not just famous for its chocolate; students will experience a blend of rich culture and history of St. Gallen along with the variety of activities and venues for sport and outdoor enthusiasts.

Students on exchange pay in-state tuition directly to USC and do not pay tuition to St. Gallen. All housing, food, and personal expenses are paid by the student in St. Gallen. The University suggests that students budget approximately 1,950 CHF per month for housing and living expenses. The actual cost can differ depending on the student’s lifestyle. To get an idea of life on site, you will find on the numbeo website indications on the cost of living in Switzerland compared to other countries in the world.

Courses are offered in both German and English. Students have the opportunity to participate in a seven day intensive German language course prior to the start of classes for all language levels. The recommended workload for exchange students is 24-30 ECTS credits, which corresponds to 12-15 credits at USC.

The Student Union center is the hub for over 80 student clubs and where students can find the BuddySystem, which organizes excursions, trips and activities to assist exchange students in exploring the local culture and interacting with locals. The Sports Office offers on and off-campus sporting events and activities for students. Students also have the opportunity for independent travel within and outside of Switzerland.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.

St. Gallen University does not offer housing on campus. However, the International Exchange service arranges housing in furnished apartments with other students in the city of St. Gallen for a fee. Students may choose to make their own housing arrangements using the online housing market.

The spring semester runs from February to May. UofSC IB majors will attend St. Gallen for the spring semester only.

The University requires all students to attend a two-day orientation that will help students adjust to their academic and cultural environment at St. Gallen. This orientation will also include social activities and introduction to the German language.

Students studying more than 90 days in Switzerland are required to obtain both a visa and residence permit. Students may mail their visa application materials to the Swiss consulate in Atlanta. The Student Mobility office at St. Gallen assists students in the process.
