Sung Seek Moon, Ph.D., MSW, MACE, MDIV

Professor Sung Seek Moon joined the faculty of the College of Social Work in 2014, where he is also a distinguished chair of social work research. He previously served as director of the Korea-based MSW program. In 2012, Moon received the Career Achievement Award from the Korean American Social Work Educators Association (KASWEA). Prior to joining the University of South Carolina, Moon was an associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Moon’s publications focus on mental health and substance abuse. He has recently co-authored journal articles on topics including, mental health, substance abuse and suicide among homeless adults, the relationship between drug and alcohol use and self-rated health, and preventing substance abuse among adolescents by using a model combining life skills and parental training. His publications have been featured in scholarly journals, such as the Children and Youth Services Review, Research on Social Work Practice and the Journal of Social Service Research.
Moon is a member of the board of editors for the Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Social Work, Family Violence and Ethnic Populations, and Open Journal of Social Science. He served as president of the KASWEA from 2009 to 2011. Since 2013, Moon has also served as secretary and is a member of the scholarship committee of the Asian and Pacific Islanders Social Work Education Association.
Moon received his Master of Social Work from USC and a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Georgia. He also holds a Master of Art in Christian Education from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity from the Korea Baptist Theological University/Seminary.
