We acknowledge that the obstacles to this work are systemic and deeply rooted in a history of racism and oppression that plague institutions at all levels of society—including our College and profession. We envision a path forward by taking responsibility for how we individually and collectively can better embody and advance the principles of anti-oppressive social work. We invite students, faculty, staff and partnering agencies to join us in this effort. 

Committee Board

The DEI Committee (DEI-C) is a group of faculty, staff, and students that meets monthly to work on tasks and priorities related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Student members are elected by their peers. During 2022/23 we meet the third Friday of each month from 9 – 10am. If you’d like to contact the DEI-C or have a DEI-related concern you’d like us to address, please email Professor Ben Roth (rothbj@sc.edu).

Ben Roth

Ben Roth, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the COSW and the Interim Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Roth works closely with the DEI Committee and is a member of the UofSC’s Council of Academic Diversity Officers (CADO).

Parthenia Luke

Parthenia Luke is a Doctoral Candidate at the COSW and the College’s Diversity Fellow. In her role as Diversity Fellow, Luke works closely with the DEI Committee and the AD for DEI.  

 

2022 Diversity Fellow  

PhD student Parthenia Luke is the newly appointed Social Work Diversity Fellow. She will assist COSW in developing a long-term strategic plan for improving DEI at the College. 

Although she is the current Fellow, Luke is not new to this work. As an instructor, she works with Social Work students to create a positive and dynamic learning environment in the college. As a task force member and adviser last year, she helped organize the teach-in for faculty, staff and students. In her new role she’ll build on this work to enhance advocacy and diversity at the College.

She brings insight, experience, and a deep commitment to the work. We’re very fortunate to have her on the team!
