Master of Science in Performance Nutrition and Dietetics

Graduate Degree in Performance Nutrition & Dietetics

Performance Nutrition (PN) is the application of nutrition therapy to optimize physical performance and enhance recovery. Performance Dietitians with the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential provide PN and Performance Nutrition Therapy (PNT) services to all individuals engaged in physical performance including traditional and non-traditional athletes, recreational enthusiasts, performing artists, and more.

An RDN, also known as a registered dietitian (RD), is a credentialed healthcare professional that applies evidence-based information about nutrition and diet to contribute to the health and wellness of individuals, groups, and populations. RDNs work in a variety of settings including in healthcare, government, community, industry, education, and private practice. RDNs focus on all aspects surrounding the journey of nutrients from production and distribution in food/food products, through consumption of food and dietary behaviors, to the physiological utilization and metabolism of nutrients derived from food. RDNs specialize in the use of nutrients in the human body and help their clients/patients by identifying the changes in nutrient requirements with changes in the body that occur with growth/age, changes in health, and/or changes in performance demands.

We currently have a graduate degree program that prepares graduates to become RDNs: The Master of Science in Performance Nutrition and Dietetics which combines didactic curriculum in the classroom with supervised learning experiences in the field. Graduates of the M.S. in Performance Nutrition and Dietetics program (MS/PND) will earn a master’s degree and a verification statement required by the Commission on Dietetic Registration as prerequisites to be eligible to take the national registration exam to become an RDN. Graduates will also qualify to fulfill state licensing requirements.

The USC Master of Science in Performance Nutrition (MS/PND) is a two-year (5-semester) academic program in which students complete 44-credits of didactic and supervised experience course curriculum that enables them to earn a master’s degree as well as eligibility to take the RDN credentialing exam. The supervised experience courses are designed to provide 1200+ hours of learning experience in professional settings with preselected preceptors. The program is housed in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. Within the program, students will gain educational experiences on-campus and on-site in professional settings within and around Columbia, SC.
