2026 Student Awards

The Department of Health Services Policy and Management is proud to announce the recipients of their 2026 Student Awards. These students were selected for their outstanding performance both academically and outside the classroom.

Student Award About
Ryan Hunter  Susie J. Yates Award for Excellence in Scholarship: Ryan Hunter

Created in memory of Susie James Yates and sponsored by the South Carolina Hospital Association, this award honors Ryan Hunter, a second-year MHA student from North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership, and promise for executive success. What makes this award especially meaningful is that it reflects the voices of the students themselves, as the recipient is chosen through peer voting. This year's award was presented at the South Carolina Hospital Association Annual Meeting in December 2025.

James (D'Andre) Good AUPHA Foster G. McGaw Scholarship Award: James (D'Andre) Good

The Foster G. McGaw Scholarship, awarded through the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), provides financial support to students in health administration programs. Each year, AUPHA member programs receive scholarship funds to recognize students who demonstrate outstanding achievement and promise. The scholarship was endowed by Foster McGaw, founder of the American Hospital Supply Corporation, in recognition of the importance of health administration education and AUPHA's contributions to the field.

Within our program, recipients are selected based on a vote of the MHA faculty, recognizing students who have distinguished themselves academically and professionally.

D'Andre Good currently serves as a Regional Provider Coordinator with the South Carolina Department of Public Health, where he works with providers and community organizations to improve access to cancer screening services. He also served as Fundraising Chair of the Healthcare Leadership Association and will soon present his management residency project, titled "Improving Partner Productivity in South Carolina's NBCCEDP by Leveraging Analytics and Reworking Internal Processes," at the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

Taryn Senger AUPHA Foster G. McGaw Scholarship Award: Taryn Senger

Taryn Senger served as a Graduate Assistant in Operations and Planning at Lexington Health, where she contributed to strategic planning, market analysis, and service line development. She was actively involved in student leadership through the Healthcare Leadership Association and recently defended her management residency project, titled "Development of an Operational Framework and Implementation Plan of an Obstetric Emergency Department," at Lexington Health. She will begin her Health Administration Fellowship with Novant Health in Charlotte in June 2026.

Makiyah Lewis ACHE Albert W. Dent and Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student Scholarship Award: Makiyah Lewis

Established by the Foundation of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), this scholarships honor Albert Dent, the first African American Fellow of ACHE, and Foster McGaw, the founder of the American Hospital Supply Corporation. These awards are given to outstanding graduate students in healthcare management programs and provide financial support to help offset tuition costs and educational expenses. Recipients are selected through a highly competitive national review process conducted by an ACHE committee.

Makiyah Lewis was selected by ACHE as one of just 15 recipients nationwide-an achievement that reflects her academic excellence, leadership, and service within our program and beyond. Makiyah has served as President of the student-run Healthcare Leadership Association, contributed to patient experience and nonprofit work through Operation Sight, and is completing her GAship before beginning a full-time role as Program Assistant in Graduate Medical Education at Lexington Health, where she will support residency operations, community engagement, and orientation initiatives.  Makiyah also recently defended her management residency project, titled "Strengthening Front-End Financial Performance with Point-of-Service Collections," at Lexington Health.
