Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health.

The long-term success of our department has been rooted in a deep, abiding commitment to advance the public’s health through research and by training and empowering the next generation of epidemiologists and biostatisticians.

There has never been a more exciting time to be working in epidemiology and biostatistics. With an ever-expanding list of threats to human health, we are rising up to meet the emerging health threats of the present day while also training the leaders who will be prepared to tackle the unforeseen public health challenges of the future. Our faculty expertise spans a broad spectrum of topics that enable us to confront the most pressing public health issues of our time.  As epidemiology and biostatistics continue to evolve as disciplines, our faculty are vigilantly working to ensure that we are keeping our students on the leading edge in the art and science of public health.

This department has a proud tradition of excellence. We have been dedicated to high quality teaching and research for more than four decades, with an impressive list of noteworthy accomplishments. The accomplishments of our alumni stands as testament to our  quality program in training epidemiologists and biostatisticians. While we honor our history, we are deeply invested in forging an even brighter future. At present the department has 28 core faculty and we are currently in a growth phase with several active faculty recruitments underway.

We offer rigorous, high-level training in a collegial, supportive environment. We are preparing tomorrow’s public health leaders today with our multi-faceted educational program; this includes a curriculum with rigorous methods complemented by practical applications, mentorship, practicum in teaching and consulting, and abundant opportunities to participate in top-tier research.
