Global Health Initiatives

As a College of Nursing we are working to identify and solve complex global health problems and disparities in a sustainable manner while training the next generation of global health leaders.

Reaching the world

The University of South Carolina College of Nursing is committed to leading through collaboration with key international, university, state and community stakeholders and prioritizing the improvement of health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. This includes health outcomes, health care delivery, understanding national health systems and eliminating health disparities.

Our goal is to be the leader among colleges of nursing in equipping our students with cultural competence and global health expertise and in researching systems or practices contributing to health differences based on culture or ethnic characteristics.

The college offers study abroad opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to several countries including Nicaragua, Australia, Costa Rica and more. We also have partnerships with the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne and Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg in Germany and participate in a student exchange, allowing UofSC students to immerse themselves in those cultures while educating international students on the American health care system.

Our faculty conduct and present on global health research across the world. Dr. Sue Heiney developed Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery (CLIMB), a support program for children whose parents have cancer, and taught the program to oncology colleagues in Japan. Dr. Robin Estrada and Dr. Laura Hein conduct research focusing on health disparities among differing populations.

The University of South Carolina College of Nursing Global Health Initiatives is proud to partner with the Timmy Global Health student organization at UofSC.  Please visit the Timmy Global Health Facebook page for more information about their organization.
